BROWNING RETAINS WORLD’S MAT TITLE IN THRILLING BOUT: NEW YORK, NY - The champion narrowly misses losing his crown when he is hurled from the ring by Hans Kampfer, fiery German grappler, during an exciting contest in Madison Square Garden. 3. MOTHER SEEKS SON’S PARDON: CHESTER, PA - Mrs. Grover Cleveland Bergdoll pleads with President Roosevelt to permit her boy – the war’s most famous draft dodger – to return to the United States. 4. HUGE PLANE READY FOR TESTS: STRATFORD, CT - A new nineteen-ton “super flying boat,” designed by Igor Sikorsky for Pan American Airways and hailed as a possible trans-Atlantic transport ship, is shown to the public for the first time as engineers prepare for its initial trial flight. 5. BREEDERS SHOW FAT CATTLE: FORT WORTH, TX - Prize specimens of heavyweight hogs, pigs, sheep and cows get unusual beauty treatments that include permanent waves, before competing in one of the Southwest’s biggest exhibitions of the year. 6. Church entry becomes the first two-time winner of the $25,000 handicap as he leads a fine field home in the thrilling feature event of the local racing season. 10. Grover Cleveland Bergdoll (October 18, 1893 – January 27, 1966) was an early aviator, racing driver and World War I draft dodger, who went to Germany to avoid prison. Bergdoll was born in Philadelphia to a wealthy brewing family. He was one of 119 people to train at the Wright Flying School, and in 1912 he purchased a Wright Model B biplane for $5,000.
